The unexpected with clients/new models

Posted in Uncategorized on July 13th, 2010 by admin

With clients and new models you never know what to expect. Most of the time you don’t know how comfortable they will be in front of the camera, how good they’ll be able to pose or even really what they look like. So enter Kathleen, client and first time model. I was very pleasantly surprised with Kathleen for many reasons. 1) she was very comfortable in front of the camera and had great energy and playfulness. 2) she came up with quite a few cool poses. 3) she has a very beautiful and unique look. Vanessa liked her look so much that she insisted on playing dress up for her. Kathleen agreed so Vanessa immediately pulled out one of her dresses for Kathleen to try on. Vanessa and I were both speechless on how great it looked on Kathleen. See for yourself.

Fun with a ladder

Posted in Andrea, fashion, shoot, studio on July 13th, 2010 by admin

So I am already slacking on the blogs again. Thus there will be two blogs tonight. The first is from a shoot I did last week-end with Andrea. We had such fun and success last time that we were out to top it this time. Although I don’t think we rivaled our previous shoot there were still some cool shots in this one. We decided that for this shoot we would play with my step ladder. It allowed for some interesting poses but at the same time made all of us struggle to come up with these interesting poses. Unfortunately this shoot also got wrapped up early because Andrea wasn’t feeling the greatest but you would never be able to tell in the photos as she gave it her all.

How novelties die quickly

Posted in Izabella, Kaily, Kaitlin, Karen, Madison, Vlada, fashion, models, shoot, studio on July 2nd, 2010 by admin

I told myself when I created this blog that I would write one for each shoot and show off all the photos from the shoot here instead of posting a whole bunch of FB, DA, MM, etc. I started off doing that for every shoot but like all things the novelty of the blog died or I just found myself without enough time to update it after every shoot. So here is a blog for a whole bunch of shoots. A lot of my last few shoots have been focused on 2 models, Vlada and Izabella. Coincidentally the first time i shot either of them was together. Izabella just moved to Toronto this week so I was trying to shoot with her as much as I could before she left. We managed to get 4 shoots in there which was great. I am going to get to shoot with her one last time hopefully when I go to Toronto in 2 weeks. I have also shot with Vlada 3 times recently. She is one of the most naturally talented models I have worked with in a long time. I will be shooting with her a lot in the future if I have my say. I also recently shot with a model from Antigonish, Kaitlin. This was the first time I have worked with or met Kaitlin but I enjoyed our shoot quite a bit. Finally today i worked with the very experience model Karen for the first time. Karen and I had talked about shooting a long time ago but things sort of fell apart and it wasn’t until this week that we tried to get a shoot organized again.

Now for some more exciting news. Over the last couple of weeks I have gone into business with my friend and model Vanessa Furlong. She had been designing clothes for a few months now and needed a financial backer/partner so I took on that roll. With this one of the things she needed was some work space so the two of us leased a studio. So now she has a place to sew her clothes and I have a studio to do my photography in as previously all these photos were shot in my living room. I am really excited about this studio and it has been fun so far. We still have some work to do on it such as painting, building a change room and make up counter but it is coming along nice. I do have some before photos that I could post but I will wait until it’s complete and post the end results. I will also be posting more about Vanessa’s fashion line in the next week or two. So stay tuned.

Now for some photos from the shoots I mentioned above.

What Are Your Photos Worth To You?

Posted in Andrea, Sancha, fashion, shoot, studio on May 31st, 2010 by admin

Yesterday I had to make the decision of how much my photos are worth to me. The reason is because yesterday I had a fashion shoot with Andrea. The first set was fun and pretty cool but the second set in my opinion are amazing. They are some of my favorite fashion photos yet. However after the shoot I put my CF card in my card reader and it wasn’t appearing on my computer. So I took it out put it back in my camera and my camera came up with an error about a directory and didn’t show any photos. I then put it in the card reader in my printer. That showed the card but showed it as completely empty! I nearly lost it thinking that I lost all my photos. So then I started looking for recovery software for my mac. I found a few and ran them and they showed the files. Excellent! However they were all demos and would not restore the files. So then I had to decide are my photos worth the $100 for the software. Normally I would say no, a set of photos isn’t worth $100 if that was paying to get photos not knowing what they would look like. But knowing how good these photos are and how much they meant to Andrea it was an easy decision I think. Who can really put a price tag on what the photos are worth. I think these ones are worth every penny and more.

And the true money shot in my opinion:

The last photo was the final one we took as after knowing how good the shoot was going and seeing that pic we figured there was no way we needed any more. Also thanks to Andrea’s friend Sancha for the awesome job with hair and makeup.

My Venture Outside

Posted in Izabella, Selena, Vlada on May 27th, 2010 by admin

Last week-end was the May long week-end so my friend and fellow photographer Billie wanted to do a collaboration shoot. Our plan was to do fashion during the day and artistic during the night. As Billie is primarily a natural light, outside photographer she dragged me outside for the fashion shoots. We got two models and a make up artist for the fashion shoot. One model, Vlada, Billie had shot with a few times before. This was my first time shooting with her but had met her once before. The other model Izabella is new to modeling and had only a few shoots under her belt. Both models were fantastic and a joy to work with. I am definitely hoping to shoot with both of these girls again soon.

As I am not normally a natural light, outdoor photographer it took me a while to get into a grove with shooting so a lot of the earlier photos I didn’t like as much. But the second set I did with each model I really like. At least it was a good learning experience. Here are a few samples

Implied Fashion

Posted in Claire, fashion, models, shoot, studio on May 8th, 2010 by admin

A few weeks back I sent Claire (and a few other models) some sample photos of a style I like. The style is a fashion style with hints of artistic pushing the envelope of what you see. We decided to have some fun with this shoot and use my couch for a lot of it. Even though it was a pain in the ass to move. This was my first attempt at this style and still have a long way to go but I am happy with the results for a first try. Hopefully there will be more sets like this soon. Here are some of the samples.

I am also really loving the $6 chains I got from Michaels. They were very multipurpose in this set.

Now that’s a bathing suit

Posted in Krystal, fashion, shoot, studio on April 26th, 2010 by admin

Last night I had a photo shoot with Krystal. Shock I know! We did three different sets however two of the three don’t matter at all. Why you ask? Not that those sets were bad at all they just cannot compare to the middle set. Krystal got this fantastic deal on this really hot bathing suit that we decided to shoot in a fashion style. We again used my white boxes for the shoot and tried to make all the lighting/poses fashion oriented instead of glamour which is common for swim wear. The funny thing, although Krystal and I both love the shots, I think they could have been even better as I am not 100% satisfied with the lighting of the set. I don’t know why I didn’t notice while shooting but I think the lighting could of been much better. Although I am happy with the results I got from doing some post work. But hey if I was 100% satisfied then there is no room to grow right? So here are the pics.

Friday’s fast yet fun fashion shoot with the fantastic Finka

Posted in Finka, fashion, shoot, studio on April 24th, 2010 by admin

Isn’t alliteration fun? Finka and I have been planning on shooting again for a while. We had been planning a shoot for my crayola series but have been having scheduling conflicts with the makeup artist we were going to use. As that wasn’t getting resolved I asked her to see if she wanted to do some fashion stuff in the meantime. The shoot was pretty quick as she came with wardrobe on, hair and make up done. Makes life much easier! Finka is a natural and has a fantastic look. Too bad that she isn’t tall enough to get some real fashion gigs. I know I will definitely use her for more fashion shoots in the future. Here are some of the samples.

Before Amy goes away

Posted in Amber, Amy, fashion, shoot, studio on April 24th, 2010 by admin

I had contacted a few model a couple weeks ago about a shoot I was planning for May. Amy messaged me back saying that she would like to participate but wouldn’t be able to as she is going to Calgary for two months. As it has been a long time since I last shot with Amy I wasn’t just going to let her go without doing a shoot so I got her to come in and do some fashion sets before she heads out this week. I have no idea why I waited so long in between working with her as she looks fantastic in every photo. We brought Amber back in to do makeup for this shoot. Here are some of the shots.
